Model SAARC is an educational simulation and academic competition in which future policy makers learn about diplomacy and regional relations. Like the Model United Nations it involves and teaches research, public speaking, debating, and writing skills, in addition to critical thinking, teamwork, and leadership abilities.
Delegates in Model SAARC Summit will be referred to as Delegate, and will be placed in committees and assigned countries. They will be presented with their assignments in advance, along with a topic or topics that their committee will discuss. Delegates will conduct research before conferences and formulate positions that they will then debate with their fellow counterparts in the committee. At the end of the Summit, the best-performing Delegate in each committee may be recognized with awards.
A three day summit will be organized with four member alumni delegations from each SAARC member country. In addition, to discussions focused on specific regional issues, the delegates will meet policy-makers, government officials, NGO leaders, embassy and high commission representatives and journalists. During the summit, three committees will be formed to work together on follow-up projects. At the end of the summit a “Dhaka Dialogue” will be announced that will focus on engaging youth to build the trust required for increased regional integration. The conference’s plenary session will be followed by a press conference, the Delegates will be asked to brief the media in their respective countries.
